Today was one of those days when I really wish I had a vice principal in my building. It would be nice to discuss things with someone and to work through a few things that were going on. Heck, we talk about gettting teachers out of their classrooms yet most administrators are on their own in many buildings. I could have called someone or even taken the time to write about what was going on but there’s something about seeing how another person reacts when you say something or the feedback you get that either confirms what you are thinking or gives you a new perspective.
So, maybe, do administrators, especially in schools with only one, need to have access to some sort of ichat that allows one to talk and discuss situations. It might not be the same as having someone in your own building but at least when you were talking with the person, you’d know if they were paying attention or doing something else as they try to multi-task during the conversation (not that administrators would do that but then you’d know for sure:) ) Would not a MacBook with iSight technology be much less expensivie than a vice principal? Just a thought. Today was a day I really could have used another ear.
I’ve been doing some exchanging with a few other people who I’ve run into on the web. Some are very good at sharing and discussing ideas. Some just like to share their ideas – beyond us mere mortal techies :~( I’ve seen that there is a need to bring together two different and, on the surface, contrasting views of schools: the technology lacking view and the collaboartive/data lacking view. Both see schools not doing there best for students and offering solutions. Well, could it be that both need to be explored and, together, bring about the change that both seem to be seeing needs to take place in the place we call school. Either/Or thinking will not bring about the kind of changes that will be needed in schools. It has to be a place where we use the strengths of each other to combine our learning in such a manner that we can help each student learn and progress. As is said in so much of what I’ve read and heard, it is the synergy of the people that brings about lasting changes. Can you imagine the synergy created by combining the learning opportunities that technology tools give us while building a collaborative environment that uses data to reflect on what is happening with learners? Hmmmm!
